There are many reasons that you or a loved one may have received a Zimmer Durom hip replacement, the end result is that you or your loved one could now be in a dangerous situation. Hip replacement procedures which are also known as hip arthroplasty, is a fairly common procedure where the hip joint itself is removed from the body and then replaced by an implant. There are many reasons for actually doing this, including but not limited to sever arthritic pain which was caused by the joint, or as a joint gets older it can be subject to damage or deterioration, to provide resolution to a hip fracture, which happens often to older people.
What is considered to be modern hip replacement surgery has been in effect since the 70's, this is why the public perceives it as such a commonplace thing. A hip replacement, such as those from Zimmer Durom, most often involves three separate pieces, engineered to replace and duplicate the operation of a joint. They include a metal replacement for part of the femur. There is also a component which facilitates natural movement that simulates a natural joint, and either bone cement or screws to hold the contraption in place.
A revision is often required to be performed after the initial hip replacement surgery, or a further surgery to correct issues with the implant. Unfortunately, this is something many elderly and even healthy young patients cannot tolerate. This is the main focus of what is becoming known as the Zimmer Durom recall. The Zimmer Durom device was used by doctors in younger patients that would normally need a hip replacement, especially considering that it was designed to be a long lasting solution. However, almost 12 percent of these patients needed surgery again within two years, prompted both emotional and physical reactions.
Zimmer Durom initially stated that this high failure rate was due to errors that the surgeons performed, however in July of 2008 they stopped the sales of their hip replacement device. In a study funded by the company, what they found was that 8 percent of the people that received the initial hip replacement required a revision surgery withing a two year period. This significant revision percentage has basically led the medical and legal communities to accept that the issue is the device itself and not the way in which it was inserted during surgery.
If you or someone you know has had a hip replacement surgery in the last several years, contact your physician to find out if it was made by Zimmer Durom. If you determine that it was a Zimmer Durom device, regardless of whether you are experiencing difficulties or not, it may be possible for you be included in a class action law suit. If someone from Zimmer Durom contatcs you, do not sign their legal release, or you may lose this right.
